The Endocannabinoid System
Early studies of the Endocannabinoid System revealed a string of receptors in the body whose job it is to help process CBD. It was originally believed that the CB1 and CB2 receptors were the only parts of this system.
The CB1 receptor works with CBD that responds to parts of the body such as the brain and the central nervous system. The CB2 receptor works with larger components of the body such as organs and our immune system.
It is important to know about these receptors because you want to make sure that the CBD you use responds well to the areas in which you are needing help. Our team here at YSC is very knowledgeable about this subject and we are able to help you find a CBD product that will benefit you best.
Further studies on the Endocannabinoid system revealed that we have several other receptors whose job it is to help process terpenes. This is valuable knowledge that helps to decipher which terpenes to add to a CBD oil depending on the benefits you’re looking for.
Terpenes are organic compounds of every plant that provide several different medicinal benefits such as pain or stress relief. We understand that everyone is different and we each require help in different areas. This is why YSC adds terpenes to our CBD oils; to provide you with the specific help that you need.
What is the Entourage Effect?
SUMMARY:
While there is still a great deal to be discovered and understood, what you should know is that cannabis is a medicine that relies on the synergy between many different chemical compounds (terpenes and cannabinoids) working together; this phenomenon is known as the “entourage effect”.
LONG EXPLANATION:
The term “entourage effect” has become an important piece of vocabulary in the cannabis community to describe the relationship between terpenes, cannabinoids, and other phytochemicals (chemicals made by plants) which are responsible for the vast therapeutic potential of cannabis.
By now, most people have heard about cannabinoids such as THC and CBD. While these compounds have a range of medical benefits, they are only part of what makes cannabis medicine so effective and have proven to be less effective on their own than when combined with other phytochemicals like terpenes.
Both cannabinoids and terpenes affect receptors in the endocannabinoid system which is what allows cannabis to act therapeutically in the human body, this action in some cases also produces the “high” which most are familiar with.
It is the terpenes in cannabis that modulate (modify or control) the effect that the cannabinoids in each sample will have on the user, this is why strains of cannabis affect each user uniquely. For example, if you have 2 different types of cannabis and both have 15% THC, but one gives you energetic effects and one gives you sedative effects, this is largely due to the different terpene profiles.
How does THC Affect the Endocannabinoid System and Behavior?
When a person smokes marijuana, THC overwhelms the endocannabinoid system, quickly attaching to cannabinoid receptors throughout the brain and body. This interferes with the ability of natural cannabinoids to do their job of fine-tuning communication between neurons, which can throw the entire system off balance.
Because cannabinoid receptors are in so many parts of the brain and body, the effects of THC are wide-ranging: It can slow down a person’s reaction time (which can impair driving or athletic skills), disrupt the ability to remember things that just happened, cause anxiety, and affect judgment. THC also affects parts of the brain that make a person feel good—this is what gives people the feeling of being “high.” But over time THC can change how the EC system works in these brain areas, which can lead to problems with memory, addiction, and mental health.
What is the Difference Between Broad Spectrum CBD, Full Spectrum CBD, and CBD Isolate?
Understanding the difference between the three major types of CBD is a huge step in your CBD journey. Having a full understanding of what each of these options offers will help you decide which CBD products will best fit your needs.
Full Spectrum
Full-spectrum or “whole-plant” CBD contains everything the CBD plant contains including flavor, terpenes, and other cannabinoids such as CBG, and trace amounts of THC. This type of CBD offers the full Entourage Effect due to the cannabinoids and terpenes working together in perfect synergy. (The full chart below shows the benefits of whole plant CBD)
Broad Spectrum
Broad-spectrum CBD can be described as full-spectrum CBD without any THC. This form of CBD can still contain an array of cannabinoids and terpenes. This is a good option for individuals who cannot have any trace amount of THC in their system whether it be for medical, personal, or legal reasons.
CBD Isolate
CBD isolate is typically the best choice for people who are sensitive to other cannabinoids such as THC. Isolates are CBD that has been separated from all other cannabinoids that the hemp plant contains. In the process of extracting CBD for an isolate, any trace amounts of THC, terpenes, wax, oils, and any other cannabinoids are removed, leaving the purest form of CBD. When looking for an isolate it is important to be sure to verify the purity. If the isolate is not pure, it can still contain terpenes, cannabinoids, or trace amounts of THC.
What are Terpenes?
Terpenes are an organic compound that can be found in all plants. In other words, they are the essential oils of a plant. Terpenes create the entourage effect and have been known to hold numerous medicinal benefits such as pain relief or stress relief. It is important to know about terpenes because the CBD flower naturally contains terpenes that are lost in the CBD extraction process. YSC has found that a lot of CBD retailers do not know about this loss of terpenes, and so they are unable to ensure that their product will supply you with the full potential benefits that the hemp plant offers.
Because of this, YSC has our own lab in which we are able to add those terpenes back into our CBD oils. In addition, we have several options of CBD that contain additional terpenes for extra medicinal benefits such as arthritis relief. The chart below displays some terpenes and a little bit of information on what those terpenes offer.
